Scott Placek is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Auburn University with honors in 1987 with a degree in business economics, and graduated from the University of Texas School of Law with honors in 1992. While in law school, Scott was a member of the Texas Law Review, Chancellors and Order of the Coif.
He joined Vinson & Elkins in Austin upon graduating and practiced in its business litigation section, specializing in insurance related litigation. After a short stint teaching at the college level, Scott became a principal in the firm of Skelton, Woody, Arnold & Placek focusing on insurance litigation and commercial litigation. Scott left Skelton, Woody to join the Austin firm of Bickerstaff, Heath, Smiley, Pollan, Kever & McDaniel as a litigation partner where he practiced prior to forming Arnold & Placek in February 2003.
Scott is a member of the bars of the states of Texas and Arkansas, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and all US district courts in the state of Texas. His practice remains focused on commercial and insurance litigation, with special expertise in insurance bad faith defense, coverage litigation, insurance regulatory litigation, insurance fraud and premium litigation, contract litigation, consumer protection/deceptive trade issues, healthcare litigation, employee benefits litigation and workers’ compensation issues. In addition he represents clients in administrative proceedings before state agencies, focusing primarily on insurance, healthcare and licensing issues. He is a licensed mediator and a frequent speaker to CLE and insurance industry groups on a variety of insurance litigation issues.
